Orioles Sign Cintron; More Opening Day Thoughts, The Oriole Post in Another Sun Column

The Orioles just signed Alex Cintron to a minor league deal. You've got to wonder if he'll be a potential replacement for Luis Hernandez if he doesn't get it together at the plate or in the field.

Not much is going on aside from Guthrie hitting the showers after being shelled.

Aubrey Huff, boy will he have it tough. When you get booed after getting a hit, you know people are still pissed at you and the anger is not going to go away for a long time.

FYI - I did another interview last week with the Baltimore Sun, and this time it centers on the popular "Crab Shuffle" game. Scott Christ of Camden Chat also contributes to the piece.

O's Nearly Stage Another Comeback Against the Bucs...

If you weren't at the Yard yesterday -- much less this weekend -- you've missed some incredible baseball by out 2008 Orioles. Well, Sunday was nothing short of incredible, as the Baltimore Orioles nearly came back in an inexplicable fashion, but the Pirates knocked us out the 10th inning. In the end, Baltimore dropped the third game of the interleague series to Pittsburgh, 5-4.

For third consecutive game, Oriole Magic came alive again as Brian Roberts jacked a two-run opposite field home run off Matt Capps in ! the bottom of the ninth inning with two out. The usually reliable George Sherill came into the game in the tenth inning, but a RBI single by Adam LaRoche's in the tenth drove in the winning run.

It was later revealed via Roch's blog that Sherill now has a case of "tired arm".

Despite the loss, the Orioles engineered yet an incredible comeback that no one could have foreseen; however, this season, anything is now possible.

However, in light of yesterday's near euphoria, there's one troubling thing that most fans noticed -- could Daniel Cabrera be regressing after perhaps having a breakthrough? After looking like a completely different pitcher in April and May, June has been a return to the Daniel of old -- inconsistent, lacking confidence and command.

A while back, it was discussed on the blog what would happen if Daniel lost a g! ame and would he be able to come back and be effective? That q! uestion is now up in the air. Like I said before the season began, Daniel Cabrera may be the one ingredient that may help the Orioles in 2008 or break them. His poor starts have been somewhat overlooked by Baltimore's unexpected performance, but his last three starts have been troubling and his ERA has nearly climbed up a run since then.

Every good pitcher has a poor start every once a while, but most don't have three in a row.

I'll ask again nearly a month later -- do you think Daniel Cabrera could ever be a consistent pitcher at this level, or will we have to get used to his Jeckyll and Hyde performances?

Are The Orioles Close To Having A New Spring Training Home?

One of the side stories in the offseason with the Baltimore Orioles organization has been about possibly securing a new home for spring training, or refurbishing their current home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Now the Baltimore Sun has some news on that front:
Vero Beach, Fla., and Indian River County officials are hopeful that Orioles owner Peter Angelos and the team's upper management will meet as early as next week and approve an agreement that would make Dodgertown the team's long-term spring training home starting in 2010.

Representatives from the Orioles and Indian River County and Vero Beach spent Wednesday and Thursday meeting in Orlando, Fla., trying to complete a deal that has been discussed for more than a year. A negotiation agreement between the Orioles and the county expired yesterday, but government officials are prepared to giv! e the team time to review the offer.

"We have made them our final offer," Vero Beach Mayor Tom White said yesterday. "After many hours of discussion and changing this and changing that, I'm hoping that Mr.Angelos and the board of directors will accept it. I think it's a good offer and they'll be happy here."

Orioles executive vice president John Angelos, who is heading the organization's search for a long-term spring training home, hasn't returned calls this week. Director of communications Greg Bader said the team wouldn't be commenting on the matter.

The Orioles have long maintained they are committed to staying in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where the club has trained since 1996. They will be back in Fort Lauderdale again in February, but barring a significant change in the coming months, it could be their last training camp there.

I'll say from visiting the Orioles facility in Southern Florida -- it is woefully inept and beh! ind the times in terms of sports complexes. The stadium in For! t Lauder dale does not compare to the other spring training homes in Florida, and is frankly outdated.

I would have no problem with the organization moving north to Vero Beach; however, aside from a great complex and atmosphere for baseball, there's not frankly much to do in the vicinity.

Vero Beach is closer for many fans who drive from the Northeast; alas, in terms of hotels, nightlife, food, etc., it does not compare to Southern Florida. But I'll say that Vero Beach's facility is perfect for spring training, and you could do worse.

I should say Vero Beach -- a small town -- does not have the profile, size or activity of Ft. Lauderdale, a much larger city.

However, I hope the Orioles stay in South Florida just for sake of staying there.

Rest in Peace, Catwoman; Eartha Kitt Dead at 81

According to the AP, Eartha Kitt, a sultry singer, dancer and actress who rose from South Carolina cotton fields to become an international symbol of elegance and sensuality, has died of colon cancer. She was 81.

She was a great Catwoman back in the day during the campy "Batman" series. Rest in peace, Eartha.

Ex-O's in Washington; The Roundup

Peter Schmuck and Roch Kubatko had posts on their respective blogs on how many ex-Orioles have found a home 40 miles south on the Parkway in Washington, D.C.

As most fans know, the Washington Nationals are a team that lost 102 games last year and are trying to find a way to the top in the National League East.

From Roch's blog: For those of you keeping score at home, the Nationals have added another former Oriole to their camp roster - infielder Alex Cintron, who signed a minor league deal.

By my count, Cintron is the seventh ex-Oriole or farmhand who will suit up for the Nationals in spring training, joining Willie Harris, Daniel Cabrera, Corey Patterson, Freddie Bynum, Josh Towers and Gustavo Molina. Harris and Cabrera are on the 40-man roster.

Murphy's Late Blast Pulls O's Ahead of Rival Red Sox; Bergesen Impresses...

This afternoon in Fort Lauderdale, the Baltimore Orioles downed the Boston Red Sox, 5-3, thanks to Donnie Murphy's two-run homer in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie in Grapefruit League Action.

Once again, a young pitcher caught the eye of O's fans and team personnel, as today the honor belonged to Brad Bergesen. The pitcher who had an amazing season in Bowie in 2008, threw three shut-out innings in which he gave up four hits, struck out three, and walked none..

Hearing the radio broadcast while telecommuting at home, Bergesen did one thing really well -- throw strikes. One might think that he'll be sent to Norfolk to start out the season; however, with the way he's looked this spring, it may be hard for Dave Trembley to deny Bergesen a sport on the roster.

Orioles Take Second Game in the Battle of the Beltways (with photos)...

For the second night in a row on the banks of the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington, the Baltimore Orioles defeated their rivals down 295 -- the Washington Nationals -- by a score of 2-1. The Orioles only mustered three hits on the night against National pitching, but a critical pinch-hit triple by Aubrey Huff in the seventh inning -- who had been mired in a 1-for-18 slump before his at-bat -- off National reliever Ron Villone to break a tie at one made the difference on Saturday night.

Baltimore once again got another strong pitching performance from their arms, but starter Koji Uehara only lasted three innings and left because of a sore hamstring. To add the situation with Uehara, Roch noted in his blog that the hurler may have gotten tired too and a tad dehydrated pitching in the humidity last night. He didn't allow any runs on the night, and Brian Bass came in to pitch three innings of relief and earned his third win. George Sherrill pitched a scoreless n! inth, striking out the side to earn his 9th save.

Bass gave up a run in fifth inning as Cristian Guzman hit a solo home run -- his second -- to the game at one.

Yankees Blow Out O's With an Eight-Run, Eighth Inning

Sunday's game against New York started out as a close game, and it looked like Baltimore was perhaps going to suffer a close loss; however, the Yankees hurt the Orioles in the eighth inning by scoring, yes, eight times – a similar event took place a few weeks ago at Camden Yards.

In the end, the Yankees took what was a 5-3 game and turned it into a 13-3 final whipping once the Orioles got their bats in the frame. The Orioles could not get the sweep, and Chris Waters along with Bob McCrory got shelled hard in the eighth inning, being charged with four runs each. It looked like a virtual hit parade as New York batted around and then some, which started off with a Hideki Matsui three-run homer and fell apart from there.

Matsui ended up having five RBI, Melky Cabrera with three and Mark Teixiera with two thanks to an RBI-double in the eighth inning. The game was made eventful as both Alex Rodriguez and New York manager added great theatre to their ejections, but! the rest of the afternoon would suck for Baltimore.

Jeremy Guthrie was not as effective as he on Sunday as in his past four starts, and he took the loss – his 14th on the season. He lasted 5 2/3 innings and was charged with five runs given up. He would allow the Yankees to score in the first off an Alex Rodriguez RBI-single, and then twice in the fourth off a Melky Cabrera RBI single, and gave up two more in the sixth off two-run single from Hideki Matsui.

Flyers Void Trade For McLaren

According to TSN:

The Philadelphia Flyers have nullified the trade they made on March 4 for defenceman Kyle McLaren. The 31-year-old did not pass his physical, according to Flyers GM Paul Holmgren.

McLaren had been sent to Philadelphia from San Jose in exchange for a sixth round pick at this year's draft.

Not something that you see everyday. Maybe the Flyers just realized that it was a pretty stupid trade to have made in the first place. McLaren has a pretty hefty contract (3yr deal worth $7.5m that expires this summer), which is the reason that the Sharks had him playin! g in the AHL this season. For some reason he had only played 17 games all season in the AHL - so it's likely that he has some type of nagging injury.

According to The AHL Stats page, McLaren hasn't played in the AHL since the beginning of December. What made Philly think that he was even worth trading for? I know that the Sharks have good depth on defense in their farm system, but if McLaren couldn't make his spot in the AHL, what would make the Flyers think he could help them in some way?

Anyone know more?

How The Matchups Look After One

East:
Boston/Montreal - Boston lead series 1-0
Rangers/Capitals - Rangers lead series 1-0
Devils/Carolina - Devils lead series 1-0
Penguins/Flyers - Penguins lead series 1-0

West:
Sharks/Ducks - Anaheim lead series 1-0
Detroit/Columbus - Detroit lead series 1-0
Vancouver/St.Louis - Vancouver lead series 1-0
Chicago/Calgary - Chicago lead series 1-0

Clowe on the Trade Block: Sather Should Inquire

According to TSN:
The San Jose Sharks are in discussions with a couple of teams, with Sharks forward Ryan Clowe the centre of trade talks.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have shown interest, but aren't willing to part with their first round pick to close the deal, while the Philadelphia Flyers have also shown interest. However, San Jose is believed to have asked for either Claude Giroux, or Scott Hartnell...a price the Flyers aren't willing to pay.

Nothing reported yet about the Rangers being interested and there probably won't be, b! ut this is the type of player that the Rangers should be making a call about. Clowe is a big boy (6'2 & 225lbs) - pretty much the reason why you know the Rangers won't look into him. While not THE answer to the Rangers goal scoring problems, he has some hands and he is the power forward that the Rangers need.

Take a look at Clowe's stats [Link]

Not sure what I'd be willing to give up in return if I was Glen Sather, if the report by TSN is accurate then the Sharks may be asking for a little too much. He's an RFA this summer after making $1.6M last season. But, it's certainly worth the phone call.

If history tells us anything, it tells us that the Rangers are far more likely to go after a little forward like Brian Gionta. [Rumor link] Which is exactly! what the Rangers don't need - another guy who's about a buck ! fity soa king wet.

Latest on Blair Betts

Not much has been heard about Blair Betts over the past few months. Betts who has been a reliable 4th line center for the New York Rangers since the 2005-06 season and one of the best penalty-killing forwards in the game is an unrestricted free agent. At the beginning of the summer it was assumed that Betts would be back with the Rangers, since he and Freddie Sjostrom were one of the main reasons why the Rangers penalty-killing was so good last season. But, soon there were rumblings that the Rangers weren't interested in re-signing Betts and not long after that, the Flames signed Freddie Sjostrom.

There! was an article today in the Calgary Sun discussing Betts' offseason and what the latest news is around the soon to be ex-Ranger.

Blair Betts has never been in this position.

The gritty centre, who spent the last four campaigns with the New York Rangers, has always known in the summer where he'd be plying his trade in the upcoming season.

This year, however, he is still looking for a job.

Surprising really, considering the relatively low price tag for Betts' solid penalty-killing and faceoff abilities.

"Things have been pretty quiet for about a month now," Betts said yesterday. "I'm not sure what's going to happen. We'll just have to continue to wait for a couple of weeks and see what happens."

Betts, 29, is one of a number of pros skating at a camp in Edmonton in prepar! ation for the upcoming season.

He's also one of a hand! ful of f ree agents yet to sign with a team. Mike Comrie, who is also attending the camp, is another.

"It'll be interesting to talk to some of the other guys who haven't signed either, and kind of hear what's been going on with them," Betts said.

"Right now, there are a lot of teams that are pretty close to the salary cap and are dealing with some tough numbers right now. It's a tough time for a lot of people right now, but what can you do? You just have to be patient."

A former second-round pick of the Calgary Flames, Betts scored six goals and added four assists in 81 games last season with the Blueshits.

£14.5 million for Downing?

What's the world coming to? Do our board, and more importantly, our manager, feel that Stewart Downing is really worth £14.5 million? Let's just recap; £14.5 million for Stewart Downing.

Being Spurs fans, we seem to have lost sense with financial reality, especially after spending in the region of £33 million on Darren Bent & David Bentley. But surely we as a club have learned from our mistakes?

How on earth is Downing worth £14.5 million? I hope that this rumour is untrue. If though, by a miracle, this story is accurate, and we have bid £14.5 million for Stewart Downing, then I can't, for one minute believe that we have the financial clout to build the proposed new stadium. We'll be publishing an article on stadia financials at a later date.

What I can foresee, is that all the overtures made by Steve Gibson (who in my opinion happens to be the best footballing chairman anywhere) in an attempt to stop Downing from l! eaving will fail.

The question is what price will we have to pay for him?

Sheva Sambut Tawaran Roma

LONDON - Penyerang Chelsea Andriy Shevchenko meretas jalan keluar dari Stamford Bridge. Dia sedang mempertimbangkan beberapa tawaran, salah satunya dari AS Roma.
Sheva masih menyisakan satu tahun kontrak dengan The Blues.

Fabiano Ingin Ditangani Leonardo

Persoalannya, klausul buy out Fabiano mencapai €30 juta. Sementara, Milan hanya berani menawar €16 juta.

Zenit Coba Tawar Andriy Shevchenko

Milan Ikut Kejar Rafinha, Tapi Tergantung Oddo

Galliani Luangkan Banyak Waktu

MILAN - Penghuni AC Milan belum bersatu. Satu sama lain masih berbeda visi.

Liga Champions : Di Eropa, Milan Beda

Agar tak terus terpuruk, kemenangan tentunya menjadi target utama.

Go sepak bola !!

Rafa wants Reds reponse

The Reds have been in awesome form in the Premier League of late, but suffered a disappointing setback in their UEFA Champions League endeavours in midweek.

A 2-0 defeat away at Fiorentina has drawn plenty of criticism, although the Reds have been the first to admit that they were well off the pace in Italy.

They have an ideal opportunity to bounce back this weekend, though, when they travel to Stamford Bridge to take on potential title rivals Chelsea.

Benitez insists he has been pleased with how things have gone in training this week, but admits he will not know how his players will respond until they take to the field.

"The reaction of the team has been positive, and we have looked at all aspects of what went wrong," said the Spaniard.

"We have worked in training to try to correct those mistakes. The staff have analysed everything, we looked at everyone.

"But we had too many players not doing well (against F! iorentina). It was not just one or two players but everyone.

Approach
"We cannot go into the Chelsea game playing like that. If you look at both sides, normally we each have around 25 chances a game. But if we allow Chelsea to have that many, we will lose.

"We must improve in defence, and we must play to our strengths and keep attacking and creating chances."

He added: "The comparison between the two halves in Florence was that in the first period we had one chance and they had nine, but after the break we had 13 and they had just one.

"This could be a chance to change things. The players must not go into a game believing everything will be okay.

"The attitude of the players, their approach, has to be spot on. Top sides always think they will win and are confident. Chelsea will be like that so we must match that with the right mentality.

"If we have to change something, we will. So I expect even top play! ers to work very hard.

"This game is important. If ! we win t hen people will be saying we can win the league. If we don't they will say we have no chance."

Pentingnya Lawan Hongaria bagi Ronaldo

Lisbon,-

Sicuramente, infatti, prenderemo giocatori in tutti i reparti".

L'obiettivo è chiaro: portarlo a Torino a giugno.

England boss defends Benitez Singing as Fab

ENGLAND boss Fabio Capello last night hailed Alberto Aquilani as the perfect replacement at Liverpool for Xabi Alonso.

And Capello should know, having given midfielder Aquilani his debut when he was in charge at Roma.

The England manager said: "I know Aquilani very well as I gave him his first game at Roma.

"He's a really interesting player and, at 25, this is a good moment for him to move from Italy to England. His style of play is the same as Alonso's."
Italian international Aquilani is joining Liverpool for £20million to take over from Alonso, who finally moved to Real Madrid last week in a £30m deal.

Aquilani has passed his medical with Liverpool and agreed a five-year contract at Anfield. Meanwhile, Alonso – who spent five brilliant years at Liverpool – has revealed he ended his illustrious reign in just two hours.

That's how long it took the Madrid-bound Spanish star to thrash out an exit strategy with boss Rafa Benitez.

Alonso said: "Yes, my departure was very hasty. It all happened so fast I didn't have time to say goodbye properly.

"But I will return to bid farewell as soon as I have the chance."

Matuidi happy with Les Verts

The France international was linked with a move to Arsenal, although no official bids were forthcoming from the Emirates.

Matuidi concedes he thought a move would happen at one stage, but is not too down that he stayed in Ligue 1.

The 22-years claims he is happy at St Etienne and is now looking forward to a successful season with Les Verts.

Wasn't easy
"It wasn't easy. I had contact and at one point I thought a move would happen," he told skysports.com.

"But I didn't move and to be honest it's not the end of the world.

"I'm fine and I'm happy leading this great club. So let's see what happens in the future.

"I want to have a great season here and we'll have to see what the future holds."

Harrington hangs onto Bridgestone lead

AKRON, Ohio – Having played two of his best rounds of the year at the Bridgestone Invitational, Padraig Harrington is willing to settle for something less on the weekend.

"I'll take two more times under 70 on the weekend and we'll see how we get on," Harrington said Friday after following a 64 with a 1-under 69 to grab a one-shot lead over Tim Clark.

Harrington, winless in official tour events since last year's PGA Championship at Oakland Hills, was at 7-under 133. He led by two strokes after an opening 64, then came back with a 69, putting up subpar scores in consecutive rounds for the first time in four! months.

Clark shot a 69 to stay in sec! ond plac e, and Scott Verplank was alone in third with his own 69 to get to 135.

Tiger Woods, chasing his seventh win in the Bridgestone, had an even-par 70 and was tied for 13th, five shots back. It is the first time he has ever been out of the top 10 after a round at Firestone Country Club.

The conditions might change soon. Thunderstorms were predicted for the weekend, which could change the dynamics on a course where the greens have gotten progressively harder and faster. With the Firestone South layout stretching to 7,400 yards, any substantial rainfall would likely make the course seem longer.

Harrington's drought coincided with swing changes he implemented after winning last year's PGA, his third victory in five major championships.

Seldom in contention over the past few months, the Irishman conceded he is was overly afraid to make mistakes on Friday.

"That's always natural whenever you're out there in front," he said. "You're always cautious that, yes, you'd like some birdies, but you're always aware that you don't want to drop shots. There were times that I was a little bit conservative."

In the final two rounds, he said he would pick his spots to take chances — even though he didn't think anyone would be going terribly low at Firestone.

"I just need to trust myself a little bit more, be a little more positive and hit the shots," he said.

More than most, Woods knows what Harrington has faced while tinkering with his swing. He has had doubters when he has reconstructed his.

"You have to believe in what you're doing, absolutely. And you have to believe in what you're doing is right — eve! n though people tell you what you're doing is wrong," Woods sa! id. "You 've got to have the internal resolve to stick with what you believe is going to be right, and you're going to get better."

Neither Clark nor Verplank have won this year on the PGA Tour, either, although Clark made it to a playoff at the Colonial before losing to Steve Stricker.

The South African had never cracked the top 45 at Firestone the first four times he played it. But he has had a tie for sixth and a tie for 20th the last two years.

Clark admits that he's learned how to approach the layout.

"I always used to try and do too much," he said. "The last few years I've realized you just have to get it in play, get it in the fairway, and from there you have a chance."

Verplank, whose best finish this year is a tie for fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, ran off 35 holes without a bogey until hitting it into the trees at the 18th on Friday.

"I love coming here, particularly when it's dry like this," Verplank said. "The golf course sets up really good for me when it plays kind of firm and fast. When it starts raining and gets real soggy, then it starts getting a little bit too long for me."

That's the worry for anyone who isn't a long hitter.

Prayad Marksaeng (70), Stricker (69) and Jerry Kelly (65) were at 136, with Woody Austin (68), Alvaro Quiros (65), Zach Johnson (70), Hunter Mahan (69), Mike Weir (66) and Robert Allenby (69) another shot back.

Woods is hanging around, too. His rounds of 68-70 match what he had the last time he played at Firestone two years ago when he ended up winning by eight shots. Woods missed the Bridgestone a year ago while recuperating from knee surgery.

"You just have to be patient," said Woods, coming off a win at the Buick Open.

Asked if someone could shoot a 62 or 63 and pull away, Woods cracked, "Yeah, it's out there — if you play 16 or 17 holes you can get it."

Just a shot behind Woods was Phil Mickelson in his return to the tour after spending six weeks with his wife as she fights breast cancer. Mickelson was encouraged by how things have developed the first two days — and what it might portend for next week's PGA Championship at Hazeltine.

"The grass length is the same, the rough is similar, green surfaces are similar, same speed, same grass," said Mickelson, who toured Hazeltine last week. "It couldn't be a better venue (to prepare) for Hazeltine."

Harrington, who has never won a World Golf Championship event, isn't thinking about next week. Not yet, anyway.

"Break 70 on the weekend a few more times and I should be doing OK," he said.

Williams sisters can't meet in US Open final

Serena Williams, right, and Roger Federer, of Switzerland, pose for photographs ! AP – Serena Williams, right, and Roger Federer, of Switzerland, pose for photographs during a news conference …

NEW YORK – Serena and Venus Williams have met in eight Grand Slam finals, most rece! ntly at Wimbledo! n last month. The U.S. Open won't feature No. 9.

The No. 2-seeded Serena and No. 3 Venus are in the same half of the U.S. Open field announced Thursday, meaning they could face each other only in the semifinals of the year's last major tournament.

"It is a shame. They're the people to beat. They rise to the occasion at the big ones, especially Serena," three-time U.S. Open champion John McEnroe said.

"In interest level alone, it's too bad," added McEnroe, part of the CBS Sports announcing team at the tournament.

That network began carrying the U.S. Open women's final in prime time in 2001, a move widely attributed to the sist! ers' ascension in the sport. Venus beat Serena that year for the championship, and nearly 23 million viewers tuned in, giving the final the largest TV audience of any program that night, including a football game between Notre Dame and Nebraska.

In July, Serena beat Venus at Wimbledon for her 11th Grand Slam singles title — four more than Venus owns. Serena also leads 6-2 in major finals and 11-10 overall in professional matches.

"There's definitely a rivalry, especially when we step out on the court," Serena said.

"We never talk about numbers, per se. But when we're on the court, we both have in the back of our minds that we won that many matches against each other," she said. "At least it's in the back of my mind."

There won't be Williams-Williams to decide a title, but there could be Federer-Nadal. No. 1-seeded Roger Federer and No. 3 Rafael Nadal were drawn into opposite halves of the field when the draw was held behind closed doors Wednesday.

They have played in seven major finals as Nos. 1-2, including at each of the other three Grand Slam tournaments, with Nadal leading 5-2. But because Nadal recently fell to third in the rankings, there was a possibility the two men who have dominated tennis in recent years would wind up on the same side of the bracket in New York.

Instead, 15-time Grand Slam title winner Federer has No. 4 Novak Djokovic and No. 5 Andy Roddick in his half. Federer edged Roddick 16-14 in the fifth set of the Wimbledon final in July.

Federer is bidding for a sixt! h consecutive U.S. Open title, but he wasn't always so comfortable in New York.

"I used to struggle here a little bit," he said Thursday, "just because I had trouble with the wind, trouble with the humidity ... my mind would wander during the tournament."

The potential men's quarterfinals are Federer vs. No. 8 Nikolay Davydenko, and Roddick vs. Djokovic in the top half; No. 2 Andy Murray vs. No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro, and Nadal vs. No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the bottom half.

Nadal could face Murray in the semifinals for the second straight year at the U.S. Open; Murray upset Nadal in 2! 008 to reach his first Grand Slam final.

Nadal's first Grand Slam action since his fourth-round loss at the French Open will start with an intriguing opponent: Richard Gasquet, the former top-10 player coming off a 2 1/2-month suspension for testing positive for cocaine.
